The Florida Southern College chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honors Society, is hosting biweekly movie nights.

Sigma Tau Delta began holding the events this semester, and themes the selections around literary and artistic works. According to Vice President of Sigma Tau Delta, Kenzie Bengry, the idea is to encourage students to read so that they can better enjoy the movie experience.

There have been three movie nights so far. The first featured the Disney movie, “Hercules,” which is loosely based on Greek mythology. FSC students study Greek drama in Masterpieces of World Literature.

The second movie night featured “Dead Poets Society” starring Robin Williams. Though not based on a novel or literary work, the movie focuses heavily on the importance of literature in every aspect of life.

The most recent of the series showed the critically-acclaimed “Loving Vincent,” an animated film whose frames were each hand-painted by a team of artists. The movie explores the events surrounding Vincent Van Gogh’s death through the lens of one of the sitters for a portrait a year after his passing.

Students do not need to be members of Sigma Tau Delta or even English majors to attend movie nights. They also do not need to have experience with the literary background of the featured movie. The purpose of these movie nights is to discuss literary works as well as exposing students to works they may not be familiar with.

The next Sigma Tau Delta movie night will be held on February 26th at 8:00 PM in the Moc Theatre, which is downstairs in Christoverson. For more information on movie nights and other events Sigma Tau Delta is hosting, follow @fscsigmataudelta on Instagram.
