FSC replaces homecoming week with new alumni events
At any college, homecoming week is a big deal. It is essentially a time for alumni to come “home,” and reunite with old classmates and friends. Florida Southern recently decided to twist things up a bit by discontinuing homecoming week.
In place of homecoming week, Florida Southern plans to have a Silver Mocs weekend and a Gold Mocs weekend. The Silver Mocs reunion weekend will be to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the alumni’s graduation, while the Gold Mocs reunion weekend will be to celebrate the 50th anniversary since graduating from Florida Southern.
The events will be held on different weekends and incorporate different activities for each specific group. They also plan on holding regional events in the future as well.
This past weekend was the first Silver Mocs reunion weekend. It took place Friday afternoon and lasted until Sunday morning. Alumni who graduated between the years of 1990 and 1994 were invited to partake in the event.
The Silver Mocs event is more social, so participants got to be involved in variety of activities. They could choose between a pre-game huddle with the basketball team, receptions with former professors, a 90s dance party and much more. Those whom were involved in Greek life also had the chance to go explore the chapter rooms and catch up with current brothers and sisters.
The Gold Mocs reunion event will not be as social and active. They will still get to socialize and participate, but the activities will be more suitable for their age group. According to Director of Alumni Relations Jennifer Olivier, participants will still be a part of Founder’s Day Convocation, get to go on a bus tour and finish the day with a celebratory dinner party.
According to Kyle Shatto in the Admissions office, Florida Southern chose to switch to Silver and Gold Mocs reunion events because the school tends to acquire the same group of alumni at homecoming weeks each year. Since many of Florida Southern alumni are not from Florida, it is easier for alumni to come down for a special event rather than a yearly homecoming event.
“I came to a homecoming event for my 50th reunion, it was good seeing all my friends I have not seen in a while,” Alumna Patricia Nimnicht said. “I do understand why they’re switching to Gold and Silver events, when you get older it is harder to travel especially if you’re out of state.”
Though Florida Southern is discontinuing homecoming week and focusing on Silver and Gold Mocs reunion events, they will still be having activities for current students. Instead of calling it homecoming week, it will be called Moc Pride Week and will still get the current students engaged in activities and events throughout the week.
