Red-Shirt Freshman Ashley Seborowski exploded onto the Division II Lacrosse landscape after her standout performances against three-ranked opponents took her from third string goalie to three-time SSC Defensive Player of the Week.
With less than seven minutes of collegiate play time under her belt, Seborowski entered the game against Regis University to relieve the starting goalie, and turned a two-point game into a seven goal victory.
The Annapolis, Md., native boasted eight saves for a 72.7 save percentage while surrendering only three goals to earn her first win.
Seborowski continued her stellar play throughout the next two weeks, earning six consecutive wins between the pipes. Coming off her second week as starting goalie, Seborowski ranked fifth in save percentages in all of Division II, and racked up 50 total saves.
Seborowski has since earned nine victories for the Moccasins, and needs only five saves to break the current school save record held by 2013 Division II Goalie of the Year, Katie Hammerer.
Her performances against third-ranked Lindenwood and 14th ranked Queens University earned her a second and third defensive player of the week award.
“I chose Florida Southern because I wanted the chance to help bring success to a younger program. Katie Hammerer, our former goalie, was one of my good friends and the best mentor I could have asked for. I just wanted to make her, my parents and my coach proud,” Seborowski said.
Although Seborowski is currently the top ranked goalie in all of Division II women’s lacrosse, she has overcome several hurtles along the way.
In high school, Seborowski failed to make her school’s lacrosse team. Thereafter, while playing club lacrosse, she suffered a potentially career-ending injury by tearing her ACL. More recently, she’s dealing with a chronic shin injury that requires she wear a walking boot whenever she isn not playing.
“It’s been a struggle, but you never know when the opportunity to do something great is going to present itself. And you’ve just got to be ready for it,” Seborowski said.
However, Head Coach Kara Reber believes that the best is yet to come for Seborowski.
“Ashley has been doing an amazing job for us this season. She stepped up when we needed her, and I know that she will continue to accomplish great things over the next three years,” Reber said.
Seborowski and the fifth ranked Moccasins return to action Saturday, April 4, when they travel to Gaffney, South Carolina to play the 11th ranked Limestone University Saints.
