The women’s golf team finished their fall season with a first-place finish at the 2017 Newberry College Invitational.
The Mocs turned in a score of 611 for the two rounds, defeating second-place Wingate University by six strokes on Oct. 30 and 31.
The team shot a collective 308 on Friday which edged out Wingate by only four shots. On Saturday, their 303 pushed them over the top to give them their first tournament win of the fall.
Junior Tori Higgins cashed in a 74 for her final round which put all the Mocs at a score of 77 or better for the weekend. Each player placed in the top 20 of the event, the first time for the Mocs this fall.
“The team has really improved throughout the entire season, and I can’t wait to see what spring holds for us,” Higgins said.
Gartrell has been a solid force all season for the Mocs, adding yet another top 10 finish to her fall season.

Gartrell has finished in three of the four events this fall. Along with Higgins, Gartrell has led the team and will continue to be a force in the spring season.
Head coach Robbie Davis said this is a great way to end the season, but also to prepare the team for the upcoming spring.
“We are now focusing on the spring season and starting back again in February at Kiawah Island,” Davis said.
The Lady Mocs finished top three in four total tournaments this fall. This win over Wingate, Anderson College, North Georgia and four other Division II region opponents sets the Mocs up for success in the spring season.
The Sunshine State Conference will pose the Mocs’ biggest threat as the the powerhouses of Tampa, Florida Tech and Nova Southeastern frequently compete in the conference.
This fall served as great preparation against these teams as the Mocs saw them in action this fall and even placed bette then them in a few tournaments.
