Florida Southern College men’s cross country are Champions of the Sunshine State Conference.
“We won conference my freshman year and got second the past two years, so having the trophy back feels incredible. I’m honored to bring in back to FSC,” David Tomchinsky, senior, said.
Saint Leo was the main completion for the mocs.
“The hardest part was that it was the hilliest course of the season and Saint Leo got to practice there every day,” Chris Yanichko, senior, said.
Tomchinsky had a similar opinion as his teammate Yanichko
“At the beginning of the race, Saint Leo had a lot of guys in front of us. We knew we would catch them later on in the race, which we did. I didn’t think we were going to lose but I knew it was going to be very close and every point mattered,” Tomchinsky said.
Tomchinsky felt confident that his team was going to win the Sunshine State Conference.
“We are ranked first in the conference and the region, so we are absolutely the team to beat. I knew we would win conference because this is a very hard-working and motivated team,” Tomchinsky said.
The cross country team will soon face the Regional Championship.
“We have the regional meet in two weeks, where the top three teams qualify for the national championship in Spokane, Washington. So we are preparing well for regionals now, and will focus on nationals once we qualify,” Tomchinsky said.
The team is confident that it is capable of winning regionals, and qualifying for nationals.
“To win regionals and qualify for nationals, I don’t need to tell my team much. The work has been put in and they all know exactly what needs to be done in order to win. They are a great group of guys who have a lot of heart and I know they are ready to reach our goals,” Tomchinsky said.
Yanichko expressed his opinion on the NCAA championship.
“We aren’t able to win NCAA championship because there are a lot of really experienced teams from Colorado and Washington, but anyone has a chance since we are in the race,” Yanichko said.
