If the Cat Cafes didn’t catch students’ attention already, then the Meowsic Festival will. The event takes place tonight from 7-10 p.m. at the Bandshell.

Profits and donations from the event will benefit the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Alpha Chi Omega’s mission to feed the feral cats at FSC.

Vice President of Philanthropy of Alpha Chi Omega Larissa Town is taking part in sponsoring the event with event coordinator Logan Vandiver.

“Our local philanthropy is SPCA, so we’ve been doing baby steps,” Town said.  “We did spaying and neutering. Alpha Chi wanted to get more involved, so we started doing regular feedings…at six different cat stations on campus.”

Town hopes to raise money for Alpha Chi Omega’s philanthropy, to continue working with the cats on campus and to give local bands musical exposure through the Meowsic Festival.

Vandiver worked closely with Evolution Records to find the entertainment.

“It’s a music festival for the SPCA,” Vandiver said. “We chose the SPCA because of their involvement with Florida Southern College, and we figured it would be good since they’re already active in the campus.”

Evolution Records worked with Vandiver to book the entertainment and find local bands.

The music will range from country to alternative to hip-hop.

Five acts to look forward to include Junior John Rhey, Junior Hector Alcaide, the Brian Sutherland Trio and local bands RedStryke and LeapFrog.

“We want to support the local scene and bring the community together,” Vandiver said. “Evolution Records worked closely with us to book bands.”

Dr. Deah Quinlivan, the Psychology Club and the Women’s Advocacy Club teamed up to spread the word, sell tickets and determine what type of music was going to be played at the musical event.

Tickets are $5 and may be purchased in the undercaf this week from 3:30-5:30 p.m. to benefit the SPCA.

Wristbands will also be available for sale for $2 to benefit the cat food for Alpha Chi Omega. These may be purchased at the undercaf or at the concert.

Once a ticket is purchased, students will be entered for a raffle drawing to win gift cards and other prizes

“There’s going to be some awesome artists, and they’ll get some good local recognition,” Town said. “I think it will be a good way for students to get involved in the project as well.”

Giveaways include a Lanikai ukulele, gift cards for iTunes, Chili’s, Starbucks and gift coins for Evolution Records.

Chairs will be set up for students to relax and enjoy the music while booths will be set up in the back.

Food and beverages will be available at the event, and an Evolution Records booth will be set up for students to purchase merchandise.

Cat food donations are encouraged to benefit Alpha Chi Omega’s philanthropy.

“We’ve got five great musicians and it’s going to be a blast,” Vandiver said.
