Men’s soccer saw their second conference tie and first conference win
The Mocs were on the road this week for games against Rollins and Nova Southeastern (NSU).
On Wednesday, the team traveled to Winter Park, Fla. where they tied 2-2 with the Tars. This marked their third draw of the season.
The Mocs started off slow, but were able to put one in the back of the net in the 32nd minute, as James Meehan passed the ball from the right side of the field to Jacob Ling-Vannerus who took the shot at the net. Going into halftime, the Mocs lead up 1-0.
Ling-Vannerus recorded his third goal of the season just 10 minutes into the second half of the game. The Mocs held a 2-0 for a short time as Christian Adams scored for Rollins four minutes after Ling-Vannerus’s second goal.
The Tars gained speed and scored their second goal at the 63 minute mark. The Mocs found themselves in another draw at the end of regulation. The teams went into the first round of overtime with neither able to score. While in double-overtime, both teams saw opportunities in the box to score, but again were unsuccessful. The Mocs left Winter Park with a 2-2 tie.
Freshman AJ Pearce made his first ever start for the Mocs recording two saves during the game. The Mocs are now 1-2-3 for the season and 0-0-2 for the conference.
The team picked up their first conference win of the season on Saturday in a game against NSU in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Senior Eneko Lasheras jumpstarted the Mocs as he scored from just outside of the box three minutes into regulation. Pearce saw his second start of the season seeing 19 shots taken by the Sharks.
Nova Southeastern saw the back of the net at the 28 minute mark, tying the game 1-1. After halftime, NSU came firing at the net, but Pearce saved all shots keeping the Sharks from gaining lead.
Neither team was able to pull past the other and at the end of regulation, the Mocs found themselves in another over-time situation. However, this game was different as the Mocs scored three minutes into overtime seeing their first conference win. Edu Capote took a shot from the edge of the box, ending the game.
Women’s soccer drops two conference games
Women’s soccer also saw extra minutes during their home game against Rollins on Wednesday.
It was a scoreless game until Elena Beasley scored for Rollins off a penalty kick in the 94th minute of play.
Madison Hald took the first shot of the game just four minutes into play and Jenny Staten made her first save of the night eight minutes in.
The team dropped their second conference game of the season on Saturday when hosting NSU.
Neither team allowed the other to score in 90 minutes of regulation causing the game to go into overtime. The sharks found the back of the net off of a header from a corner kick six minute into overtime.
NSU outshot the Mocs 13-4. All four of the Mocs shots were on goal as only three of the Sharks shots were on target. Staten saved two of the three shots on goal while NSU goalkeeper, Shannon Hearty, saved all four of the Mocs shots.
Volleyball falls to Embry-Riddle and Florida Tech
The Mocs fell to Embry-Riddle 3-0 in their conference home opener on Friday.
The Eagles gained speed early in the first set with a 9-0 run over the Mocs to lead 11-2. Florida Southern found momentum, but were unable to catch up as they fell 25-11 in the first set.
In the second set, the Mocs found their first lead and went head-to-head with the Eagles. Embry-Riddle got ahead and took the second set 25-17.
The Mocs turned the tables in the third set leading 5-1. Again, the two teams went back and forth, but the Eagles took a 13-4 run ending the set 25-16.
Freshman setter Mika Garza set a new season-high record for assist recording 29 within three sets. She leads the team with 200 so far in the season.
On Saturday, the team took on Florida Tech in Jenkins Field House for their second home conference match.
The Panthers took the lead early in the first set, but the Mocs came back to tie 7-7. Florida Tech responded by doubling their points leading 14-7. The Mocs were unable to come back and dropped the first set 25-15.
The second set went back and forth as the Mocs went on a 5-1 run early on. The Panthers then slowly increasing their lead and took the set 25-18.
Both the Mocs and Panthers saw leads in the third set until the match was tied 13-13. Again, Florida Tech pulled ahead and took the set 25-21. The Mocs fells 0-3 to Florida Tech. Tierra Porter recorded eight kills and Garza put up 30 assists.
Cross Country runs in Florida and Minnesota
Men’s cross country splits the weekend with two races, one in Lakeland and the other in St. Paul, Minn.
Freshman Owen Allen saw Florida Southern’s first top ten finish of the season. His time of 28:14.2 earned him 9th place. Allen bettered his previous collegiate best time by 1:10.6. Warren Grajalez and Brian Martin finished second and third for the Mocs finishing in the 16th and 25th spot.
On Saturday, both the men and women raced at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minn. On the men’s side, the team finished fifth. Mason Jones placed 11th with a time of 25:53.3 and took off 20 seconds from his previous time from the UF Mountain Dew Invite.
The women’s team finished 13th and Sarah Zamot finished 14th with a time of 23:05.7. Hannah Flemming finished second for the Mocs with a time of 24:11.5 and placed 60th.
