Florida Southern’s girl’s volleyball teams winning streak came to an upsetting end this past weekend.
The streak ended with a 3-0 loss against Lynn at a home game this past weekend. The Mocs had an early lead during the first set, but Lynn fought back to win. Lynn continued fighting and won the next two following sets. The Mocs did try to retaliate and were neck-and-neck in the beginning of the third set, but unfortunately they could not keep up with Lynn. The loss came after a 12-match home game winning streak. It is also the first home loss since October of 2015, and it ended a nine game winning streak against Lynn.
Though it was a tough loss, FSC’s own Anna Tovo had 11 kills against Lynn this past weekend which is a new team high. This was also her 27th match in a row to hit double digit kills.
Southern’s Brindl Langley finished the weekend by breaking a school record. She was also named as the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Week.
“I’ve been playing volleyball since I was 12,” Langley said. “My favorite part about playing is beating a team you shouldn’t really beat and coming together as a team to celebrate.”
Langley’s long time love and dedication for volleyball has helped her lead the Lady Mocs to a 1-1 record in two weekend matches. She came up with a total of 33 digs in a 3-1 win over the Nova Southeastern. She also ended the weekend with another 28 digs in a five-set loss against Palm Beach Atlantic two weeks ago.
She has recently become fifth in Florida Southern history in career digs with 1,495, passing up her head coach who previously held the record. Langley would only need 138 more passes to beat the fourth all-time record. On top of that, Langley also had five service aces and six assists during the weekend.
Langley is currently leading the moccasin pack with 201 digs this season. She has recorded at least 18 kills within six matches this season, and has at least 28 in three-straight contests.
This is not the first time that Langley has been awarded the SSC’s Defensive Player-of-the-Week. Last November was the first time Langley won the award.
“Being player of the week means so much to me. It also means I have to work harder to be the best I can be for my team and for my coaches. It’s such a humbling award. I look at it as a way to wager better and grow as a player,” Langley said.
Langley looks at this award as motivation to continue to better herself in hopes of one day playing professional volleyball in Europe.
Due to Hurricane Matthew, the volleyball match at Rollins and the match against Embry Riddle were both postponed. The games have not yet been rescheduled, but the Mocs are still participating in the SSC/GSC crossover in Orlando on Oct 14 and 15.
