Mocs win a split in Portland tournament

Last Friday Florida Southern College’s women’s volleyball team played two matches in the Concordia Labor Day Tournament.

The lady Mocs, who are currently ranked 15, lost 3-2 in their first game of the day against Metro State. Not letting their loss bring them down, they came back victorious with a 3-0 win over Missouri S&T later in the day. The Mocs started the first game with a lead of 5-3 against Metro State, but not too far into the the game Metro State scored eight straight points to put them in a 11-5 lead. Metro State then added eight more points to the scoreboard earning a 25-19 victory in the fist set of the day.

In the beginning of the second set, the Metro State Roadrunners started off with a lead of 11-4, but the lady mocs battled back and ended up bringing the game to a tie of 12-12. Florida Southern finished and won the second set with a score of 25-23 due to Metro State committing a service error.

The Mocs started off strong with a 3-0 lead in the third set. Metro State then bounced back to turn the score into a tie of 5-5. Near the end of the game, Metro State scored four points back-to-back to bring the score to a 25-22 win for the Roadrunners.

The Mocs dominated and won the fourth set, 25-10 and continued their domination in the first half of the fifth set with a 7-5 lead. Unfortunately, the Metro State Roadrunners scored five of the final six points, finishing the game with a 15-11 set victory and winning the match 3-2.

The Moccasins had a clean sweep later that day playing Missouri S&T. In the second game of the day, the Mocs won the first set in a 25-23 victory against Missouri S&T. The score was close, but Missouri S&T had a ball handling error that caused FSC to win the first set. In the second set of the second game, the Mocs won 25-19. Finally, the Mocs won their last set of day against Missouri S&T resulting in a 3-0 win against Missouri S&T.

Florida Southern’s Anna Tovo, recorded a total of 30 kills on Friday. 16 of them were against Metro State and another 14 were in the second game against Missouri S&T. Nicole Mattson had 32 digs and 42 kills between the two matches and Bethany Besancenez finished the day with a total of 72 assists and a total of 149 throughout the weekend. Allie Geary aided the lady Moccasins with a total of 17 blocks throughout the weekend.

The next match for the Mocs will be a home game. The Mocs will be hosting the FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic on Sept. 9-10. It will take place at Jenkins Field House and will host five teams. The Mocs will be facing UC-Colorado Springs, LIU Post and Texas Woman’s. Our rival, Rollins will also be participating in the conference, but they will not be battling the Mocs until the regular season begins.
