This month will mark the 20-year anniversary of one of the most celebrated alternative-indie rock albums of all time: Nirvana’s “In Utero.”
“In Utero,” the band’s final album prior to Kurt Cobain’s tragic suicide in 1994, touched the lives of all who were grateful to live in that time period to see the tides change for rock ‘n’ roll music.
This album changed the way people looked at this genre and showed the band’s true self. It was inspiring in its own way and came with many deep, personal messages.
Fans even called it Cobain’s “last musical testament” with many hidden, deep messages about his personal life.
Cobain’s legacy has gone on to inspire many successful alternative rock bands, most notably the Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl, ex-drummer of Nirvana, is the lead singer.
Songs included on the album were “Heart Shaped Box” and “All Apologies.”
Both songs include incredibly powerful lyrics and soft alternative-indie rock beats hinting at Cobain’s personal life on a much deeper level.
The songs describe only a small glimpse into the life of Cobain and the other members of Nirvana while they were breaking through the music scene of the 80’s. All songs included on the original album are on the 20th anniversary edition, completely re-mastered.
Also in honor of the anniversary, the living members of Nirvana are releasing a “super deluxe, 3-CD and DVD box set,” complete with never-before released tracks, demos, and live recordings of their final tour line-up before Cobain’s death.
MTV will also be resurrecting live footage of performances and songs from the album in honor of the anniversary and releasing them on DVD Sept. 24.
Performances of some songs from “In Utero” will also be featured on MTV and VH1 for the remainder of the month.
Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any talk of a holographic Kurt Cobain going on tour yet like several other deceased musicians.
Nirvana and “In Utero” have truly left a mark on all musicians today with cutting-edge sound and influential, record label-defying songs.
The band came out of nowhere in the 80’s and delivered a new take on rock-and-roll music.
They inspired many bands to create their own sound.
Nirvana has left a legacy, and the 20th anniversary edition of “In Utero” reminds us of one of the greatest monumental bands in rock ‘n’ roll history.
