On Feb. 22 the well-known Thrift Alumni Room will be transformed for a live-watch of the Oscars. The event will be called a Night at the Oscars. It will be hosted by Community Living and Just Ask.
Usually in January the Association of Campus Entertainment and Community Living co-host the annual Rave at the Roux, but not this year. This year ACE will be hosting a Caribbean Night instead, according to junior Ryan Towne. Community Living will be co-hosting a Night at the Oscars with Just Ask to promote awareness on a variety of topics such as sexual health, sexual harassment and alcohol.
According to Towne, Rave at the Roux was not having as high an attendance as it used to, so everyone decided to try something new.
Community Living and Just Ask plan to decorate Thrift with a red carpet, photo-booth, beer googles, bar with high top tables, drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
Gift bags will also be given away at the event. Currently it is stated the “contents are to be determined,” but the items in the “swag bag” will be useful for students.
The idea for Night at the Oscars was developed by the Director of Student Development for Accountability, Education and Compliance Ray Lader.
“I wanted to bring a classy event together with some education,” Ladar said.
Director of Student Education and Compliance Amanda Blount hopes that the event will be popular with students.
“I think it is neat because it is something that is not currently being offered. It is going to be a signature event,” Blount said.
Blount feels this event comes at a great time because it is the week before spring break. This gives students the opportunity to learn how to keep themselves safe during spring break with the Just Ask initiative in place.
