Spooky Short Story: An unexpected guest

One crisp and cool fall evening became enveloped by the shadow of night once again. The night continued to creep across the sky as I decided that it was time for me to check on my one and only daughter who was supposed to be asleep in the room across from mine. I had sent her there to climb in bed and wait for me to put her to sleep, and it was time I kept up my end of the bargain. When I was only steps away she called out.

“D-Daddy?”

“Yes?” I responded as I opened the door. Her eyes looked different, they looked more like small glass beads.Poor thing must have been crying.

“Can you…check for ghosts?”

I was taken aback for a moment because she had never asked me to look for ghosts or ghouls or any sort of other worldly being. I took my position on the floor to begin checking for any spiritual intruders.

“Honey, you know there are no such things as ghosts, why ask me to look?” I said as I leaned down.

Underneath the bed there was nothing more than a sock and a doll, nothing spiritual or out of the ordinary. But as I rose and turned to the closet I felt a chill go down my spine, and an odd feeling began to form in my gut, as if I was just plunged into an icy river. I swallowed my unexplained fear and carried on with my fatherly duty. I put one foot in front of the other, one then two…one then two. My own fear was building and the room felt dark and ominous. Why had we decided to give this room to our child? The corners housed nothing holy or safe, only darkness and cold resentment. The walls had faces of family and friends but come night only eyes of a piercing glare remained. The floor creaked as I stood in front of the closet.

Slowly I opened the closet door, it seemed as though the entire house had hushed for this moment. On the floor of the small closet, sat my one and only daughter. Nothing but ice ran through my veins along with the realization of what was happening. A presence so vile sat behind me.

My daughter spoke. “D-Daddy? T-There’s something…in my bed.”
