Spring recruitment gives non-affiliated students another chance to become involved with a Greek organization. Every fall semester Greeks go through a four day recruitment process. For women’s recruitment, after ranking by both possible new members and current members of each house, invitations are sent out for upcoming events later in the week.
Women’s recruitment last semester had over 250 possible new members attend. This year’s Fall recruitment brought the total of Greeks at Florida Southern to 682, 33 percent of the student population, according to Director of Student Involvement, Amanda Blount.
The process of Spring recruitment varies from that of fall.
“Spring recruitment is a little less formal than fall recruitment. Most girls that go through spring recruitment either went through fall recruitment and did not join a sorority or in some cases just became interested in a few houses,” Ashley Buckley, vice president of recruitment, said.
Each organization is different. For sororities, if the membership number is under 76, they are allowed to give invitations to a certain number of women, if they meet GPA and membership requirements.
“Some are having events and some are only extending invitations without hosting an event,” Blount said.
Organizations, such as Alpha Omicron Pi, will be having recruitment events on Jan. 14, 16, 23, 29, and Feb. 6. January 14 event is themed “Pumps and Pearls”. The one on Jan. 16 is “Warm and Cozy.” The rest are to be announced. Gamma Phi Beta is also hosting a one night event on Jan. 24 in their chapter room. The recruitment event will include a tour of the Gamma Phi Beta suites, snacks, and games. An invitational dinner will follow on a later day. Alpha Chi Omega already hosted an additional event last semester with a Christmas sweater theme.
Other organizations such as Zeta Tau Alpha are not hosting any Spring recruitment events. However, they will have a Spring pledge class due to bids given out late last semester.
Caitlin McDermott, a Sophomore Zeta Tau Alpha member, still encourages possible new members to attend other organization’s events.
“This is a great chance for those who were maybe a little shy at the beginning of the year, or unsure about Greek life. It’s a great way to branch out and become more involved on campus,” McDermott said.
Fraternities are also hosting recruitment events. Theta Chi is one of them.
“Personally I love my fraternity. I know I can call anyone at anytime in anyplace and they’ve got my back. I’ve made a huge network with people all over the country that will do that same thing. We’re not just brothers while we’re in school. We’re brothers for life,” Hunter Lucier, Theta Chi recruitment chair, said.
