Megan Price, a 2019 graduate of Florida Southern College, was crowned Miss Lakeland on March 9 at the Polk Theatre in Lakeland, Florida. The LaBelle native, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Journalism, now resides in Fort Myers.   

After teaching every grade level throughout the last 51 years in various schools – Costa Rica and throughout Florida – education professor Dr. Bernardo Blanco says he is “building his legacy” at FSC and plans to continue, for the foreseeable future, his passion for teaching.

When I first began my academic career at Florida Southern College, it is safe to say I was overwhelmed by all the opportunities and chances to get involved both on and off campus. I wanted to make a name for myself and take advantage of all the opportunities I had available out of nowhere. With the high expectations I had set for myself, it was a good thing that I heard about the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship before it was too late for me to apply. The Gilman scholarship turned out to be the perfect fit for me. However, I didn’t apply for the program until my senior year of college.

Deep in the McKay Archives Center is a shelf of old Interlachens – back when they were the school yearbook – depicting the various events at Florida Southern College each academic year. If you pick the 1998 Interlachen from the shelf and turn to pages 98-99, you’ll see a band of adventurous faculty members in canoes.

To close the beach volleyball season, the Mocs competed in the AVCA Small College Championships at Hickory Point Beach in Tavares, Florida April 12-14. The team matched-up against six schools throughout the tournament as the No. 10 seed in Pool B. They started third out of four in their pool. 

The Mocs competed at the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships March 12-16 in Geneva, Ohio at SPIRE Institute Aquatics Center to complete the competition season.

The women’s basketball team will be kicking off their season in Huntsville, Ala. on Nov. 10.

On Friday, Nov. 4, the Polk Theater came to life as the newest class of members in the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame were honored.

The classic play, “Witness For the Prosecution” by Agatha Christie will run on April 5 through April 14 at Buckner Theater. Directed by Paul Bawek, the play will be shown on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday’s matinee at 2:30 p.m. on both weekends. 

Arts in Musical Theatre and a minor in communications, Morgan Bruewer continued with the Missoula Children’s Theatre for her second summer.

The theatre department closed its second production of the year last weekend with a satire comedy.

The theatre department’s first play of the year is “Unnecessary Farce,” which has just entered its second weekend of shows at Loca Lee Buckner Theatre.
