Former Moccasins Matt Joyce, Jackie Barenborg and Marianne Andersson will be inducted into the Florida Southern Athletics Hall of Fame in a banquet at the Streamline Sale Arena in Jenkins Field House on Feb. 25.
Joyce was the starting right fielder for Florida Southern’s National Championship winning baseball team back in 2005. In 170 career games as a Moc, Joyce hit .206 with 22 home runs and 121 RBI. After three seasons at FSC, Joyce was drafted by the Tigers in the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft. In 11 MLB seasons, Joyce has been named to one all-star team back in 2011 as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays and accumulated 1,182 hits and 138 home runs.
Barenborg (now Stoelting), excelled on the golf course in her four years at Southern. Now a two-time second team all-American (2006, 2007), she was a member of the Moccasins’ 2007 National Championship team and finished 11th individually at the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championship. She has played professionally since 2008, appearing in both the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and Symetra Tours.
Anderson, who began her tenure on the women’s golf team the season after Barenborg graduated, was an all-American twice in her time at FSC. In 2011, she was named to the first team and in 2010 she was named to the second team. During her four years with the Mocs, the team finished in third place twice (2010, 2011) and second place once (2009) in the National Championship. She was also the first FSC student athlete to win the NCAA Elite 90 award as the athlete with the highest GPA at a national championship tournament.
“Matt, Jackie and Marianne are all very deserving…. We are excited to have all of them back to campus to induct them,” Interim Director of Athletics Drew Howard said.
MLB Hall of Famer and Atlanta Braves legend Chipper Jones will be the keynote speaker at the induction banquet. In 19 seasons with the Braves, Jones was an eight-time all-star, 1999 NL MVP, 2008 MLB batting champion and two-time Silver Slugger award winner.
“It’s (having Jones as the speaker) a lot of fun for the inductees, our student athletes on campus, our boosters and our local fans,” Howard said. “It’ll be great to meet Chipper and get some insight on his career at the highest level.”
