Florida Southern College’s Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) will be hosting its upcoming Lake Hollingsworth Environmental Cleanup Day on Sept. 28.

TriBeta’s first cleanup event of the year will begin at the waterfront near the Moc Dock at 8:30 a.m and will last until 10:30 a.m. Members and volunteers will be cleaning up the litter around Lake Hollingsworth and properly disposing of the trash in an effort to keep the areas around Florida Southern clean. Participation in the event is open to all FSC students, as membership in TriBeta is not required.

“It’s a great opportunity to get involved in TriBeta and to help keep our environment clean,” Ingrid Ramirez, TriBeta’s Environmental Chair, said. “Since the lake is usually pretty clean, we will probably also walk around the campus to major littering sites to clean those up as well.”

Ramirez explained that TriBeta will be providing gloves and trash bags for all students who participate in the cleanup; however, students are encouraged to bring sunglasses, hats and  comfortable shoes for walking.

TriBeta is a biology honor society that encourages students to research and become involved in local projects to help better the Lakeland community.

“I am really excited to help clean up our local community,” TriBeta President Samantha Woerle said. “Lake Hollingsworth used to be really polluted, but a lot of effort has been made to clean it up. By picking up trash around it, we will be making our contribution to keep our beautiful lake clean.”

Along with cleanups, TriBeta also hosts several other fun events throughout the year. The organization holds movie nights and tabling events and even coordinates research with seniors in TriBeta to provide them with helpers for their projects.

TriBeta will also be participating in the biology department’s first Tough as Tardigrades, which is a campus-wide Biology Club event planned to take place Oct. 7 on Mr. George’s Green. Tough as Tardigrades is a carnival event sponsored by the biology department to help entertain students during midterm week.

Other organizations that will be involved in the campus event include Alpha Gamma Rho, Alpha Epsilon Delta, Rho Rho Rho, Nature Enthusiasts and the Pre-Veterinary Club. FSC students can earn passport credit, as well as get free food from this event.

Students who are interested in participating in the Lake Hollingsworth Environmental Cleanup can sign up on Engage.
