Due to Hurricane Dorian, women’s soccer postponed their season opener against Valdosta State that was scheduled for Sept. 5.
The team took on Shorter University on Sept. 6 and saw a 1-0 victory over the Hawks. Junior Rachel Peck recorded her first goal of the season in the 70th minute, securing the win for the Mocs. Freshman goalkeeper Jenny Staten recorded the first complete-game shoutout in collegiate career for the Mocs.
“I am grateful to have an opportunity to prove myself during games.” Staten said, “I owe a lot to my teammates because they made my job a lot easier.”
The team played Georgia College on Sept. 8 and once more saw a 1-0 victory. For the second game in a row, Peck scored the game winning goal for the team. The Mocs took five shots at the goal all by different players, but Amy Volk was the only shot in the first half of the game.
With a 2-0 record, the Mocs traveld to Cleveland, Miss to play Union University and Delta State. On Sept. 13, the team fell 1-2 to Union University in double-overtime. Junior Madison Hald recorded her first goal of the season and the only goal of the game for the Mocs. Staten ended her scoreless streak at 258 minutes of play in her college career.
On Sept. 15, the Mocs defeated Delta State 2-0 to end their play in Mississippi. Hald started the game with a goal in the 13th minute on the first shot of the game. Cali Larson put one in the back of the net just 14 minutes after Hald. After the first half, Delta State found their way on the Mocs side of the field, but Staten was able to keep the ball out of the net.
“We don’t have many practices before our first conference game against PBA, so every moment during practice we will be using to figure out our game plan and continue to create a good team chemistry,” Staten said.
The Mocs will play their first conference game tomorrow against PBA in West Palm Beach at 6 p.m.
