Sept. 10 kicked off a new initiative by FSC President Dr. Jeremy P. Martin. Rather than just once a semester, Dr. Martin will be going back to FSC’s roots by hosting Convocation on the second Wednesday of every month. The hope is that more frequent Convocations will allow the student body to gather the FSC community to talk about values important to the school. 

Southern Takeover returned this year on a new stage, with new musicians, and an exclusive new backstage experience. The premiere of the improved takeover by ACE left students and fans excited for years to come.

The newest exhibit, Dutch Impressionism: The Hague School 1860-1930, opened in the Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art. While Impressionism is strongly associated with the French and American movements, it extends much further.  Dutch Impressionism is far less recognized. The museum’s goal through this exhibit is to “broaden our understanding of Impressionism.”

Artist Mally Khorasantchi explores the interplay of order versus chaos, beauty, danger and growth through pain in her immersive paintings. Khorasantchi’s exhibit, “Nature & Mystery: The Art of Mally Khorasantchi,” was showcased at Florida Southern’s Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art from June 15 to Sept. 15. 

Catapult hosted its fifth Lakeland Entrepreneurship Awards on Jan. 16. The nonprofit’s event recognizes local companies that have left a significant impact on Lakeland’s entrepreneurial community and have achieved exceptional accomplishments. 

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a global non-profit organization founded in 1876 on the idea that the power of chemistry can improve people’s lives and benefit the Earth. It is currently one of the largest scientific organizations in the world, with over 200 branches, all of which provide education, professional networking, oversee publications and work toward the furthering of innovation in the chemistry field. Florida Southern College’s chapter is an active member of ACS, engaging with both the campus department and the surrounding community. The club consists of six board members and around 15 official members with numerous students from the chemistry and biology departments.

Kaitlin Gallagher admired her father, who would scuba dive the reefs of South Florida, hoping that she too would dive with him.
