Business-oriented horticulture major to start next fall

A new horticulture major is coming to Florida Southern in the fall, which includes a few different courses and a curriculum that focuses on the business side of agriculture. 

Swan City takes on the Swan Derby for it’s 17th anniversary

On April 26, Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine (LVIM) will be hosting their 17th annual Swan Derby on Lake Mirror in downtown Lakeland. This event is free admission and runs from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., consisting of three swan boat races, a fireworks show and much more. 

Freshman wins full-ride scholarship from Moccasin Battalion

The Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) at Florida Southern College is one of the top-rated ROTC programs in the Southeastern United States. The Moccasin Battalion has consistently ranked in the top 10% of ROTC programs by summer training evaluations. Alumni of the Moccasin Battalion include multiple general officers, several members of the FSC Board of Trustees and leaders around the globe.

Conflict ensues as protests break out throughout Texas and Florida sends their own State Guard members out to intervene.

Where jobs are a pleasure: FSC alumni working for Publix

It’s hard to escape the Publix identity in Polk County, especially at Florida Southern. Our field house, green and sophomore men’s dorms are named after Publix founder George W. Jenkins. The Greek suites, formally known as the Publix Charities Commons, are funded by its namesake. Students will work at their stores after classes, and their headquarters reside in the big glass building by the local airport. 

Cookie-themed First Friday draws local bakers

At October's First Friday event, the Cookie Carnival, gave local bakers an opportunity to participate in a contest where visitors and judges could vote on their favorite baked good.

“Witness For the Prosecution” set to premiere at Buckner Theater

The classic play, “Witness For the Prosecution” by Agatha Christie will run on April 5 through April 14 at Buckner Theater. Directed by Paul Bawek, the play will be shown on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday’s matinee at 2:30 p.m. on both weekends. 

Comedy ‘A Tuna Christmas’ takes stage at Fletcher Theatre-in-the-Round

The theatre department closed its second production of the year last weekend with a satire comedy.

FSC alumna speaks on life after college

Arts in Musical Theatre and a minor in communications, Morgan Bruewer continued with the Missoula Children’s Theatre for her second summer.

SGA President Gretchen Faraci said the executive board is excited to see what the senators accomplish this year. A Senate Class Project is being introduced this year, and changes are to be made to the Senator Outreach Program, which connects senators with SGA-recognized organizations.

Mocs earn runner-up in the AVCA Small College Championships bronze bracket

To close the beach volleyball season, the Mocs competed in the AVCA Small College Championships at Hickory Point Beach in Tavares, Florida April 12-14. The team matched-up against six schools throughout the tournament as the No. 10 seed in Pool B. They started third out of four in their pool. 

Mocs swim several top times, earn one national championship

The Mocs competed at the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships March 12-16 in Geneva, Ohio at SPIRE Institute Aquatics Center to complete the competition season.
