Florida Southern hockey senior night took place on Jan. 16, with pre-game celebration and brawls on the menu for the night.

The team’s four seniors Gaven Tryon, Keaton Clay, Matthew Fromer and Wayne Aarts were recognized on the ice next to their families. The seniors were also awarded their very own framed jerseys as a gift before the game started.

The night was filled with very competitive hockey and defensive hockey. This isn’t statistically shown in the first period, where the first points on the board were scored by the University of Central Florida with only seven seconds remaining.

The second period was where the action peaked, where center Will Marshall scored two goals and forward Michael Woll scored another with just 27 seconds left in the period. UCF also added another goal to the tally bringing the score to 3-2.

With no time on the clock in the second period, a scrap between the two teams occurred resulting in the exit of Will Marshall, along with two other UCF players. The UCF players were charged with “continuing or attempting to continue a fight” and unsportsmanlike conduct.

“It started with just the two guys but quickly multiple other teammates got involved knocking both Will [Marshall] and a UCF player on the ice. It wasn’t until a little bit later where the refs were finally able to get in and clean everything up,” sophomore Lillie Schwier said.

In the third period UCF stayed active, scoring a game tying goal within the first five minutes. Woll would later bring the team out of the tie with an assist from Colton Widen. Unfortunately, with just 2:43 left in the game, UCF would tie it, and it stayed that way through the overtime period. 4-4 was the final score.

Three out of the four UCF goals were scored with FSC players in the penalty box, also known as power play goals.

On January 18 and 19, FSC dropped two additional games to the powerhouse Florida Atlantic University hockey team decisively by scores of 5-8 and 3-11. FAU was a top five ranked team who now stands at 13-2-1 on the season.

Unfortunately, playoffs seem to be out of reach for the Mocs. However, the final two games will be played away at the University of Miami, where the Mocs will look to spoil the former  DIII champion’s playoff chances.
