On this day in FSC history, the Men’s soccer squad defeated Lynn University by a score of 1-0.

The highlight of the night was the only goal, scored via twin brothers Carl and Edward Spansk.

In the 36th minute of the affair, Carl sent in a corner kick to his brother Edward who then promptly used his noggin to score a header goal.

Ironically, 11 days prior Carl scored his first goal of the season against the University of Tampa in similar fashion when his corner kick flew into the back of the net, unnasissted.

It wasn’t just the twins that kept the Mocs alive during the game, as the defense posted their third conference shut out of the year to that point.

The back line featured mostly underclassmen who kept the, then national scoring leader, Chris Hellman, without a goal for the first time in the season. Additionally, Hellman only posted one shot on goal for the entire night thanks to the Mocs stellar defense.

In the net was goalkeeper Cole Clingerman, who recorded five saves on the day.

In the first 15 minutes, Clingerman was able to stop three close Fighting Knights shot attempts. After that, Clingerman wasn’t needed until the 67th minute of the game, coming up with a vital save on a corner kick that was played into the middle of the box.

In the following game against Embry Riddle, the team would end up posting their third straight shutout, a feat that hadn’t happened since September of 2002 when they put together four shutouts in a row.

Despite the season closing with a subpar 5-8-1 record, it was the first ever time that Florida Southern beat all three traditional SSC powerhouses — Lynn, Tampa and Rollins — in the same season.

This week, the men’s soccer team will look to bounce back as they take on the SSC rival University of Tampa Spartans on the road, and will return to Berend Field on Oct. 18 for their matchup against Florida Tech at 7 p.m.
