After a historic election year, Donald J. Trump will become the fourty-seventh president of the United States.

Facing off Kamala Harris, Trump swept seven battleground states, managing to earn an advantage in swing states such as Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Nevada.

In a particularily unique circumstance, Trump is the second president elect that will serve two nonconsecutive terms, the first being Grover Cleveland in 1885 and 1897.

Following his inaguaration on Jan. 20, Trump has expressed plans to increase border control, cut taxes‑along with making tips tax-free and abolishing taxes on social security-increase tariffs, and make abortion a decision to be made individually by the states.

Trump has already appointed several members to his cabinet, such as Elise Stefanik as ambassador to the United Nations, Marco Rubio as secretary of state, and Susie Wiles as the first femal White House chief of staff.

Vice President Harris also made history becoming the first female vice president of the United States in 2021. Moving swiftly and sharply after Biden’s resignation in July, Harris earned the Democratic nomination and hit the ground running in her campaign. With only four months to campaign, Harris was still able to earn $1,000,000 in fundraising.

Harris advocated for tackling the climate crisis, decreasing the cost of healthcare, and providing up to $25,000 in down-payment assistance for first-generation homeowners.

Harris has approached her defeat in an admirably graceful manner. After a conversation with Trump, she vowed to ensure a peaceful transfer of power and ensured citizens that, “America’s promise will always burn bright,” during her speech at Howard University post election.

At FSC, the College Republican and College Democrat organizations held a debate watch party in Joseph-Reynolds Hall for students to receive live results and be involved in the political science and other communities on campus.
