As we head into the winter season, our routines and our playlists begin to change. The crisp air, shorter days and cozy atmosphere bring a different kind of energy compared to fall. While autumn had its pumpkin patches, apple picking and Halloween festivities, winter invites slower moments, warmth and a soundtrack that matches the season’s calm and sparkle.
“The first song I added to my cold weather playlist is called ‘Let The Sun In’ by the Wallows. The melody of the song reminds me of how fall feels so that’s why I added it first,” said sophmore Mairin Bresnahan.
“‘Sweater Weather’ by the Neighbourhood was my first pick for my fall and winter playlist because it makes me feel super calm and like winter is coming.” said junior Meredith Pearce.

The Neighbourhood’s top hit surpassed four billion streams on Spotify as of 2025, according to my streamcount.com.Proving how popular it has become since coming out in 2012 as well as shows just how timeless the song is.
Bresnahan’s playlist features songs from Tame Impala, Ty Meyers, Gracie Abrams, Role Model and more. “I’d describe this playlist as calming, nostalgic and indie,” she shared. Looking through her playlist these three words match the vibes perfectly. “Drunk on Halloween” by “Wallows” and “Feels like we only go backwards” by Tame Impala. They both encapsulate a feeling only that fall can bring.
Everyone has their own music preferences and opinions. Music is often used as an outlet that lets people express their emotions and individuality.
“I’d describe my fall and winter playlist as calming, somber and warm.” said Avery Bailey, FSC sophomore. In her playlist it features songs from artists like Seacrows, Cigarettes after Sex and Mac Demarco. These artists are known for their soft, sweet and mellow vocals. Bailey’s fall playlist can be portrayed as a chilly November night while being wrapped up in a blanket, that’s just how cozy it feels.
The songs we listen to are often a reflection of how we feel and or encapsulates feelings, words and emotions we may not know how to express.
“I think the song that captures my current mood would be “Sleep Apnea” by The Beach Fossils because a lot of college students at this point in the semester are very tired and sleep deprived and are just waiting for Thanksgiving break and winter break, including myself,” said Bresnahan.
“A fall go-to artist of mine is Taylor Swift,” said Pearce. Taylor Swift writes songs from a poetic standpoint which is why so many people tend to relate to her songs. Evermore, Red, Folklore, Midnights and The Tortured Poets Department are just some of the albums that trend during the fall season.
As fall slowly fades, it’s time to get excited for the winter season. For senior Ashley Boyer she has jumped into the cozy winter season by not only decorating her suite with a Christmas Tree, but has also started her Christmas time playlist.
“My favorite Christmas song to listen to is “Last Christmas” by WHAM! because it reminds me of my childhood and makes me feel nostalgic about the winter time as I reflect on memories I have made with my family over the years,” said Boyer.
Ashley’s playlist serves as a reminder of how our soundtracks contribute to the transitions between when seasons change and students switch from fall favorites to winter classics.
