From the moment the lights dimmed and the curtain fell open, the audience was captivated by an amazing show. This year’s fall dance recital, Fall into Dance, was an absolute hit. Directed by Erin LaSala Philips, the show captivated Lakeland audiences all weekend.
The department-wide production showcased a dynamic range of ballet, modern, and contemporary styles with choreography curated by FSC faculty and guest artists.
Highlights included a repertory from the renowned Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company and an original work by choreographer Theresa Jimmerson. Each piece was unique in its own right, some boasting rich histories, and others seemingly more contemporary.
Although there was no apparent theme linking the dances, dance major FaTima-Grace Errami explained that the show’s main purpose is to showcase the versatility and skill within the department.
Errami shared that her favorite piece is a piece based on Rosie the Riveter choreographed by Ashley Hern. The piece opens the show by exploring the history of pioneer women through dance: “It’s been fun to get to know and learn from the girls and Ashley,” said Errami. This intricate piece further highlighted the department’s range, allowing dancers like Errami to explore expressive movement and tell stories through dance.
The girls have all been working incredibly hard to prepare for the show, however, the journey to the stage wasn’t without its challenges. The unexpected break due to Hurricane Milton and fall break knocked the dancers out of their rehearsal routine.
“A lot of us have been feeling the weight of coming back right into tech week,” Errami stated, “But we’ve put in a lot of hard work, and we’re committed to ourselves and the show.”
As expected, there are several moments from rehearsal that stick out to Errami, but one moment in particular will stay with her for a long time to come.
“I loved when Ashley [the choreographer] thanked us for our hard work. She has always been really encouraging of our work and this show,” Errami said.
As opening night approached, Errami shared her physical and mental preparation routine for the show.
“I pray and connect with the girls, who I love. Then, I remember why I dance—because I love it,” she said.
The excitement for the show was department-wide. Even those who weren’t on stage were excited to help behind the scenes. For the girls performing on stage this past weekend, the excitement was twofold. They had the opportunity to perform in their piece, and then watch and support their classmates throughout the rest of the show.
Though every performer had their motivations, Errami explained, “I just wants to go out there and do her best.”
From start to finish, Fall into Dance served as a testament to the adaptability, skill and determination of the students in the dance department. Through pieces that spanned styles and time periods, the recital captured the spirit of the performers, drawing Lakeland audiences into a vibrant celebration of dance.
