Frank Lloyd Wright Day is bringing students together April 10 for a celebration of mental health and community. The Student Government Association (SGA) is fostering campus unity for a day of relaxation, fun and mental health advocacy with this day. The day honors the legacy of the renowned architect whose designs grace the FSC campus, while also promoting student well-being.
“Frank Lloyd Wright is a huge part of the architecture and the story of Florida Southern,” Emily Walker, Assistant Director of Wellness said.
With a range of activities, collaborations with campus organizations and self-care opportunities, students can unwind, connect and focus on their mental well-being during this day off from classes.
“School’s important, tests are important, class is important, but it’s just one important piece of the whole thing,” David Aranda, Director of the FSC Counseling Center said.
SGA partners with numerous campus organizations to make this event possible. Some of the key collaborators include Disability Services, ACE (Association of Campus Entertainment), Athletics, the Simmons Center and more.
With partnerships from numerous campus organizations, the event offers something for everyone. Whether students are interested in yoga sessions, fun games, creative workshops, or simply enjoying free snacks and refreshments, this day is all about prioritizing students and having stress-free fun. Students can also expect to see lots of rubber duckies around campus.
During the event, there will be plenty of food trucks and students will receive food vouchers. A few trucks to look forward to are Slider Guys, Kabobalicious, TreeHouse Truck, WichPress, I Wanna Wok and Pamz Pizza Conez. Various campus organizations will also offer lots of sweets and treats. To keep the energy high, Southern Sound is putting on live performances.
A few events to look forward to are sunrise yoga, ice cream and music by the pool, as well as rubber ducky floats from the Wellness Center. The Counseling Center will also be providing a self-care station for students in the Jenkins Field House. There will be supplies for DIY stress balls, self care kits, and face masks. Additionally, Athletics will be hosting a sports section for students to play some fun and friendly games.
Every year, the event features an exciting main attraction. Last year’s highlight was a roller rink rave held in Jenkins Field House. The event will be released the day of on SGA’s Instagram @sga_fsc.
Taking breaks can play an important role in maintaining overall well-being, and Frank Lloyd Wright Day provides the opportunity for students to de-stress and connect with others.
“If you spend enough time relaxing and taking breaks you can refresh yourself, when you get back and start doing that work you’re going to retain more, you’re going to be more productive, and you can ultimately end up doing more in less time,” Aranda said. “If you’re with your friends, go out together, if not, take that as an opportunity to meet some of the other students that you haven’t met yet, all these different things are important, but what’s important is to have all of us together.”
Student Body President Zion Virgil wants students to know that it’s okay to take breaks, whether it’s just for a brief stop or full participation in the events.
“We’re super excited to hopefully bring them[students] an experience like none other than before,” Virgil said. “Frank Lloyd Wright Day is an investment into the students because we invest so much into the institution.”
A full schedule of events and additional details will be announced soon via SGA’s Instagram and Engage.
