Lakeland is the charming home of Florida Southern College. True to its name, Lakeland boasts numerous lakes that serve as community focal points and scenic recreational areas. Many of Lakeland’s neighborhoods are built around the 38 named lakes, offering picturesque views and abundant outdoor activities. Downtown Lakeland is a vibrant area with various attractions and activities for both residents and visitors.
Lakeland offers a diverse array of dining options. For those craving baked goods, Born and Bread Bakehouse is a must-visit. This bakery specializes in naturally leavened bread and viennoiserie, and is known for its sandwiches, desserts, pastries and baguettes with housemade butter. The bakery’s popularity is evident from the line that often wraps around the building.
Another favorite is Black and Brew Coffee House, renowned for its flavorful coffee and delicious food. The menu features a variety of options, including soups, salads, and sandwiches. For added convenience, customers can use an app to place orders if the café is particularly busy.
For a lively dining experience, The Joinery offers a range of street food from various vendors, providing both local and global flavors. It’s a great spot when you’re indecisive about what to eat, with options even including dessert vendors. Another noteworthy restaurant is Bay Street Bistro, which serves French-American and Italian cuisine, including handmade desserts.
Lakeland’s natural beauty is a significant draw for visitors and students alike. Bonnet Springs Park, located near downtown, features majestic oak trees and a sparkling stream. This regional park aims to enhance the quality of life for future generations in Lakeland. Additional natural attractions include Circle B Bar Reserve and Hollis Garden, both offering unique opportunities to explore the region’s natural environment.
Lakeland also boasts a range of attractions in the arts. The Silver Moon Drive-in Theatre, established in 1948, is the last remaining drive-in in Polk County. Tickets are priced at $8 for adults. The Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art, formerly known as the Polk Museum of Art, is located downtown and ranks among the top ten art museums in central Florida. It features a variety of exhibits, including rare 19th-century Japanese woodblock prints and ceramics by Pablo Picasso.
Sports enthusiasts can visit Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium, the spring training venue for the Detroit Tigers and home to the Lakeland Flying Tigers and Gulf Coast Tigers. The Lakeland Hockey Arena is also another spot that you can let your energy run free at. Additionally, the Lakeland Downtown Farmers Curb Market, open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., offers a variety of artisan vendors, fresh produce, food trucks, and live music.
