The Mocs are off to a great start to the 2014 soccer season as the men’s and women’s teams improve to 4-1 and 4-0-1, respectively, this past Saturday.

The Moc’s women’s team is undefeated through their first five games and is off to their best start since 2010. This year’s start is also their best under head coach Brittany Jones, who is currently in her third year as head coach of Florida Southern’s women’s soccer team.

The lady Mocs have gotten a lot of help from freshman starters who have stepped up to the plate to kick-off this season. Freshmen who have started at least one game for the Mocs this season include Juliana Guida, Izzy Loyd and Abby Bravo. Not to mention a few other newcomers who have contributed to the Mocs record so far this season.

“[The freshmen] talk about how much it pushes us because we’re competing, but at the same time we’re pushing each other,” Freshman Forward Abby Bravo said. “It’s exciting to know that, on this team, it’s not age that matters but how hard you work and we really appreciate Brittany for that.”

Bravo, fresh off her first start against eighth ranked Barry University has played in all five games so far and has tallied six points on the season. She is currently tied for second on the team with Senior Kirra Rainbow.[pullquote]The Moc’s women’s team is undefeated through their first five games

A three-time All-Hillsborough County selection during her time at Tampa Preparatory High school, Bravo looks forward to their next contest against the University of Tampa this Wednesday at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex.

“For me, being from Tampa and going to high school across the street at Tampa Prep, the UT game is a big game for me personally,” Bravo said. “… I actually played in a State semi on that field my Freshman year [of high school], so being back on that field at the collegiate level four years later is going to be a really cool experience.”

The women’s soccer team looks to keep their unbeaten streak alive this Wednesday at 4:30 pm on the road against the UT Spartans in a non-conference game. The men will also look to improve their record as they face the UT Men’s team at 7 pm on Wednesday as well.
