On Sept. 25, FSC’s Emergency Management Team announced in an email the cancellation of the week’s classes, Sept. 26 to Sept. 30, in preparation for Tropical Storm Ian.

The storm, currently over the Caribbean, is forecasted to become a major hurricane along Florida’s west coast on Tuesday night Sept. 27.

“With student safety being our top priority, we have decided to cancel classes,” the email states.

Per the email, the cancellations are meant to “allow students to travel home if they choose to.”

Two days earlier on Sept. 23, Gov. Ron DeSantis declared Polk County under a state of emergency as one of the 24 counties in the potential path of the storm.

So far, DeSantis has asked for a “federal pre-landfall” emergency declaration to make resources from the federal government available to Florida. Desantis also urged Floridians to visit the administration’s emergency preparedness website, floridadisaster.org/planprepare.
