Warm lights and sweet smells of Tutus make the perfect atmosphere for the annual Open Mic Night.
The Multicultural Student Council (MSC) will be hosting the event on Wednesday, Oct. 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. All are invited to spend an evening in support and celebration of the artistic accomplishments of our Florida Southern College students.
As attendees to the event wander to their seat, they will be welcomed into this artistic temporal field by the chilled voice of spoken word performer and host for the Open Mic Night, Jason Alexander of Smart Mouth Saturdays. One look at how MSC and the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) have transformed the ambiance of Tutus showcases how much careful thought and effort went into this event.
All wishing to perform or watch are welcome to join. According to Assia Angelini, president of MSC, senior philosophy major and creator of the event, the night and party will be a way to celebrate both the arts and the culture. Students will lead readings of personal poetry, songs and other media.
“Open Mic Night is a way to gather many different people and have more outlets and opportunities for different things,” Angelini said. “We’ve had people rap, tap dance and sing gospel ballads. You name it, we’ve probably had it at one of our open mic nights.”
Host Jason Alexander is a Polk County native. Alexander is a young, fresh voice, on the entertainment scene. Whether with a lightning-fast rhythm or a slow, methodically smooth flow, Alexander’s charisma will intoxicate you. His youthful observation and his slick story-telling style will continue to entice you into wanting more.
Ian Hildebrand, president of the Philosophy Club, and senior philosophy major had this to say about Alexander: “Jason has this command of the room that forces all eyes on him…he seems a bit intense at first, but as you stay there, you start appreciating the great time you’re having at the event.”
The first 100 people who attend the event will receive a free coupon for a drink at Tutus. This event is also a passport event.
