April 06, 2012 – At the March 16 Convocation, student government association president MG Matarazzo announced that there will be an expansion of Tutu’s Cybercafe. A colorful graphic and a brief explanation of the expansion were all that was revealed during the presentation. This announcement left many students curious as to what all the expansions would include and offer.
MG explained that in the December SGA meeting the senators met and reviewed the students wish list of what they would like to see on campus. On the top of this list is always more places to study and more areas with internet access.
Around the third week of February MG proposed the idea of expanding Tutu’s in order to accommodate the needs of FSC students. Within two weeks the idea was officially approved. To date the plan has been finalized and funded.
The expansion will encompass the entire right side next to the staircase on the first floor of the library. The shelves full of books and videos that are currently there will be relocated to other areas on the second and third floor. The actual construction will begin as soon as all of the students leave campus for summer break and will be finished by the time students arrive back to campus in August.
In August students will return to find an expanded Tutu’s that offers more electrical outlets, single tables, group tables, and two group presentation rooms.
MG explained the expansion by saying, “SGA saw this as a way to help improve the campus positively by providing more room to study and hangout. We all love Tutu’s so it stays crowded this is a way to help out with that.”

A lot of students agree that the expansion of Tutu’s will contribute positive changes.
“I like that Tutu’s is expanding because that way students have more room to study and it’s open longer than most buildings on campus. And it has the best food on campus,” Amy Reynolds, sophomore, said.
While Tutu’s is a popular spot for students and it is often crowded, especially during exam weeks, some students don’t view this as the most beneficial change.
“I think the expansion is a little bit unnecessary. We already have plenty of couches and it does get full, but we also have the tech center for overflow,” Zakera Barnes, junior, said. What we really need are outlets outside so that work can be done all over Tutus.”
There are students on both ends of the spectrum from good to bad, but ultimately the funding has been provided and Florida Southern will be adding on to Tutu’s.
